HERE LIES A PROMISING OLD MAN

Here Lies a Promising Old Man is part of a series of works called Billboards, which draw inspiration from the large advertising billboards that parade in front of the eyes of passersby, disseminating unsolicited, unexpected, often subliminal, and manipulative information that initiates recognition processes starting from the unconscious. In this specific instance, the phrase displayed on the billboard is taken from David Foster Wallace’s 1996 masterpiece, “Infinite Jest.” It serves as an epitaph and reflects on the role of dreams in a human being’s life; or, to put it another way, on the importance of recognizing and following one’s calling. Alternatively, for those who believe, it touches on the importance of not abdicating one’s destiny. It speaks to determination, frustration, resistance, procrastination, inaction, and fear. It encapsulates the sentiment of “It’s too late.”
